Understanding Suicide and Its Societal Implications | The New Exodus Podcast Ep. 3
Description
For years I have pondered the subject of suicide, but it has become clear over time that taking one’s life is foolish and wicked. Ecclesiastes 7:17 tells us to “Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool. Why should you die before your time?”
As a society, we have found a way to excuse all manner of evil and enable such to be expected or just a person having a hard time with life or blaming unusual behavior on mental illness, and worse, excusing such acts when spoken about celebrities and those we love or look up to.
Listen, evil is evil, no matter who commits the offense. We have to stop normalizing suicide. I know it is a sensitive topic, but so is murder, which is what suicide is, except for one’s self. Let’s tell the truth. The truth will set us free!
We should not let another person we know commit suicide without them knowing that the choice they make will affect them for all eternity. How can someone leave a legacy if they choose to end their own life? What about the spouses and children they selfishly leave behind? How is the choice to end one’s life fair to those needing them to be alive and well? What happened to prayer, facing one’s demons head-on, or asking for help?
So many people push their pain under the rug, as in a man hurting because of his negligent or absent father. Millions, even billions, of men worldwide did not have their father’s love in the form of acknowledgment, blessings, support, guidance, prayers, and protection. Is the lack of an earthly father give one the right to take one’s life? No. I listen to many men talk about mentorship and even growing up in the church. However, they still choose to defile their bodies and pridefully make decisions that have lasting consequences. But why take the easy road? Why give up?
Ironically, it takes a lot of courage to take one’s life, right? So, why not use that same courage and accept what is not going to be true for you and accept what is true, that your father or mother didn’t love themselves and didn’t know how to love you, so they failed you? They just failed. Did society fail us? Can an absent parent be forgiven? Absolutely. Can anyone who did wrong or harmed another person be forgiven? Absolutely. The choice to forgive is available to everyone.
Forgiveness brings freedom. People void of love tends to think that no matter what they do, they will never fill that space. Still, that space is for God to fill because God belongs there according to His commandments, to love the Lord with all our hearts and mind and put no other gods (money, riches, fame, houses, spouses, children, sexual desires, etc.) before Him (Exodus 20).
In the case of most people who commit suicide, they have an ongoing discussion in their minds and believe that they failed, but in reality, they are alive and have a choice to live and do better than their parents or in a society that doesn't cut you much slack. There are so many vices and not many light bearers.
However, anyone can choose to be the change the world needs to see despite the world reminding them what evil looks like. They can be that light or not. It’s a choice. The goal is the make the right choice.
So what is the alternative? God’s love is the answer. God’s word has all of the answers we need. We need only to believe. Faith is lacking in today’s world. Men only trust themselves and place value on material objects and money. Meanwhile, they hurt perpetually. For the black man, slavery and systemic oppression add another layer.
Ecclesiastes 7 explains why a person who commits suicide is wicked and foolish.
This harsh truth is not easy to grasp for most people, but it is nevertheless true.
We must stop making excuses for evil, for failure to trust God, the Creator of this world, and humanity. How dare humanity place themselves in God’s calling.
Celebrity status does not exempt someone from doing what is good and right, but when the choice is made to trust in self as the famous motivational speakers tell people to do, then the slippery slope shows up, and many go down it.
These motivational speakers do not acknowledge the Most High, and these absent parents have blood on their hands. To the one contemplating suicide, there is no coming back from that slippery slope.
May God have mercy on the living, those who can make a change for the better.
May all who read this post read it with the utmost sincerity and integrity as it was delivered.
In Christ,
